Jewish Synagogue, Dunfermline, Morris Balanow, and Morris Segal silver plaque

This silver commemorative plaque records: Former site of the Jewish Synagogue. The original Jewish community in this area had their Synagogue on this site. Many arrived in Dunfermline around 1900 from Eastern Europe and soon became prominent in the retail trade. Some such as the Sclars, Bernsteins and Ruddicks became well known local families. The Reverend Morris Segal followed the Reverend Balanow as the minister for Dunfermline's Jewish community and served them from the mid 1920's until the closure of Dunfermline's Synagogue in 1944. Several families then moved westwards to join the larger Jewish community in Glasgow.

Reverend Morris Balanow and Reverend Morris Segal were successive ministers of Dunfermline's Jewish Synagogue, serving a community that arrived from Eastern Europe around 1900 and became prominent in local retail trade until the synagogue closed in 1944.
