What is recorded here
This blue commemorative plaque records: Jane Leeson c. 1560 - 1649. Unusually for a woman of her time, Jane was independently wealthy and a significant landowner. In 1642 she used her wealth to build a free school for the local children of Abthorpe, and establish a trust to pay for teachers' fees in perpetuity. Abthorpe Old School is now a community venue. The Trust established by Leeson continues to support local schools, charities and education. Recorded plaque organisation: West Northamptonshire Council.
Jane Leeson was an independently wealthy landowner in 17th century England who built Abthorpe Free School in 1642, establishing a trust to fund education perpetually, thereby significantly impacting local educational access and community development.
A plaque record does not grant entry to a building or private land. View it from a public place unless permission is clearly given.
