This black commemorative plaque records: JANE AUSTEN Author: 1775-1817 JANE AUSTEN'S HOUSE Janes's home from 1807 to 1809 was cited here in Castle Square. The house was rented from the Marquis of Lansdowne, who lived opposite in his mock-Gothic castle. The Austen's garden stretched back to the town walls, affording extensive views of the New Forest. At that time the River Test, at high tide, reached the base of the walls. Recorded plaque organisation: City of Southampton.
Jane Austen was a prominent English novelist whose works, including "Pride and Prejudice" and "Sense and Sensibility," are celebrated for their wit, social commentary, and enduring influence on literature. Sir Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, known as the Marquis of Lansdowne, was a significant British statesman who served as Viceroy of Ireland and held various cabinet positions; he was also Jane Austen's landlord in Castle Square during her residence from 1807 to 1809.
