James Thomson Bottomley

Fort Breda in County Down, Ireland, gave birth to James Thomson Bottomley on 10 January 1845. His mother Anna Thomson was the sister of William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, a connection that opened doors Bottomley walked through for decades. He grew into a physicist who shaped thermal radiation, built logarithm tables, helped demonstrate x-rays in Scotland, and co-founded Kelvin, Bottomley & Baird. The small Irish town became the starting point of a life that stretched into Glasgow laboratories, royal societies, and engineering workshops.
