This blue commemorative plaque records: Following defeat at the Battle of Sedgemoor in 1685 The Duke of Monmouth was held in this house prior to his execution in the Tower of London
James Scott, Duke of Monmouth, was an illegitimate son of King Charles II; he led a rebellion against his uncle, King James II, in 1685, which ended with his defeat at Sedgemoor and subsequent execution for treason.
