This black commemorative plaque records: In honour of James Miranda Barry c. 1795 - 1865. Army surgeon and Inspector General of Hospitals in Canada. Lived as a man, and believed to be the first woman graduate of the University (1812). Recorded plaque organisation: The University of Edinburgh.
James Miranda Barry was a military surgeon who served in various capacities across the British Empire; Barry is historically significant for being one of the first known transgender individuals to graduate from medical school and serve as a professional doctor.
