James II and Oliver Cromwell blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: A 16th century house, later an inn, the accession of James 2 was celebrated here by local magistrates and there is a tradition that Oliver Cromwell was entertained here in 1648. Recorded plaque organisation: Barnard Castle Town Council.

King James II of England was a monarch during a tumultuous period in British history, known for his attempts to establish Catholicism as the state religion, leading to his eventual deposition in the Glorious Revolution. Oliver Cromwell MP, a significant military and political leader, played a crucial role in the English Civil War and briefly became Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland.
