Captain James Cook FRS RN was a British explorer, navigator, and cartographer who made three seminal voyages across the Pacific Ocean, fundamentally altering European knowledge of the region; William Sanderson was a merchant in Staithes where the young Cook worked briefly, marking an early formative experience in Cook's maritime career.
