James Butler, 5th Earl of Ormond, was born in County Kilkenny on 24 November 1420, the eldest son of the 4th Earl and Joan de Beauchamp. He became a staunch Lancastrian supporter, raising Gaelic Irish troops for England and serving as Lord High Treasurer during the Great Bullion Famine. His loyalty ended in tragedy when Yorkist forces beheaded him at Newcastle on 1 May 1461 following the Battle of Towton.
