This brass commemorative plaque records: Made famous as the place of inspiration to writers such as J. K. Rowling, who sat writing much of her early novels in the back room overlooking Edinburgh Castle. Ian Rankin, author of the Rebus novels, and Alexander McCall-Smith have both also frequented The Elephant House, as well as many other writers.
J. K. Rowling CH OBE FRSL is renowned for creating the Harry Potter series, one of the best-selling book series in history, which has profoundly influenced modern children's literature and popular culture. Ian Rankin is a prominent Scottish writer known for his detective novels featuring Inspector John Rebus, contributing significantly to contemporary crime fiction. Alexander McCall-Smith gained international acclaim for his No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, blending humor with social commentary on life in Botswana.
