Linked to St. Ninian, an early Christian saint associated with the conversion of the Picts, the site has long been a place of pilgrimage and religious significance in Scotland. Local tradition holds that St. Ninian founded a church on the island in the 4th or 5th century, and holy wells or sacred sites in the area may have been used for baptism or healing rituals.
