Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Inverkeithing, Heriot Street, 'st Heriot's Well' as Holy Well (13th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

St Heriot's Well is associated with St Heriot, a 6th-century Scottish saint and disciple of St Columba, believed to have been a hermit and healer. The well was traditionally visited for its supposed curative properties, particularly for eye ailments and general healing, and is linked to local folklore surrounding the saint's miracles.
