Invergordon Castle began as Inverbreakie Castle, a stone tower occupied by Fleming under Will the Lion in the thirteenth century. Sir Will Gordon later enlarged it, the Macleods of Cadboll inherited it, and fire destroyed much of it early in the nineteenth century. Alexander Ross rebuilt the loss as a large mansion in 1872, but the Cadboll Estates broke up and the mansion was demolished in 1928. The castle is gone except for memory, yet that repeated making and unmaking is what it still does.

Invergordon Castle was built by the Gordon family in the 15th century and later held by the Earls of Sutherland. It is important as a strategic stronghold in the Scottish Highlands and as an example of medieval military architecture.
