What is recorded here

On a slight S-facing slope. Originally set in a niche on the outer face of the W wall over the doorway of church (RO027-029001-), it has fallen out and now lies in the doorway. Limestone slab (dims 1.05m x 0.5m; T 0.15-0.2m) with a raised inscription commemorating James and Mary Plunkett of Castleplunkett, who built the church in 1723. It reads: IHS / PRAY FOR Y SOU / LES OF JAMES / PLUNKETT OF CAS / TLEPLUNKETT ESQ / AND MARY PLUNKE / ALs CUSACK HIS WI / FE WHO CAUSED TY / CHAPPLE TO BE / BUILT FOR A BURIAL / PLACE FOR THEM / SELVES AND TH / EIR FAMILY ANNO / DMi 1723 Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

Dated to the early medieval period, likely associated with the construction or dedication of the church. The inscription may have had a religious or commemorative function, possibly marking a sacred space or honoring an individual.
