Inscribed stone in Sliabh Leirg An Dachtáin

Inscribed stone

What is recorded here

Situated on SE facing slope of rising land of Slieve League are the remains of an upright stone now broken in two pieces that is known locally as 'Leac na Scriobh' (the stone of the writing) (pers. Comm. Gene Curran). The top half of the stone which is now lying in the stream located immediately to the W has the faintest traces of incised lettering which was not possible to read at the time of inspection. The top of this stone has a flat surface and when the stone was intact the flat surface of the stone gave it a seat like appearance. An old roadway is located to the E of the stone. Likely dating to the early Christian period, the inscription may contain ogham writing, commonly used in Ireland between the 4th and 7th centuries. Such stones often marked territorial boundaries or commemorated individuals, reflecting early Irish social and religious practices.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
