Inscribed slab in Ardane

In the S sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) known as St. Berrihert's Kyle and incorporated in an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, built by the OPW in 1946 (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). This slab is located in the S sector, on top of the wall. It is described by Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 108) as slab 1, composed of grey sandstone (dim. 0.28m x 0.25m; T 0.08m) bearing an inscription in Irish characters: [ ]RGUSSAN [ ]AIT DO. The U-S and the S-A are joined together in ligature. The back of the stone is blank. Ó hÉailidhe suggested translation is 'a prayer for Fergussán' (ibid. 121), however, Okasha and Forsyth (2001, 220-23) suggest that the second line may be a secondary addition.
