Inishgort

Inishgort is a small Galway Bay islet where a thin turf layer still covers a eight-metre midden of limpet shells, fire-cracked stones and white quartz. The rubbish lies beside a cashel and near a storm beach that has scattered two mudstone fragments resembling shale axes. People may have eaten, fired and worked there long before the ringfort rose, while the sea kept taking back what it could reach.
