An irregular-shaped island (dims. 42m E-W; 35m N-S) on top of which stood the castle of 'Baile Bhaiter' (WM022-043----) in the centre of Waterstown Lough now greatly reduced in size by drainage. Monument described in 1981 as a possible crannóg on the site of the present castle. There is a natural core to the island to support the foundations of a crannóg, however there is additional land retirement at the edges of the island, which probably pre-dates the building of the castle. An NMI finds index for this monument mentions the discovery of an iron arrow head (Reg. No. 1934: 488) which may be related to this site (SMR file). This small island may have been reused as in the case of Clogh Oughter in Co. Cavan or Island McHugh in Co. Tyrone.
