What is recorded here
The martello tower (DU002-004----) is built on the site of a pre-existing mound shown on an early 19th century map by Duncan. This map was drawn for a proposed post road between Dublin and Derry and is held in the National Archive (pers. comm. Mr Colin Byrne, Briarleas, County Meath). There is also a refernece to the Martello tower being built on 'part of an old Danish fort' in a 1804 manuscript (Bolton, 2008).
