Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a ruined ringfort atop a Mayo hill, its earthen bank still standing beside a deep fosse while grass chokes the entrance causeway. The south-facing gap faces open country, suggesting people once chose this spot to watch weather, traffic or trouble arrive. The chamber has vanished, but the boundary remains, marking a life that stopped being remembered rather than a place that never existed.
In pasture, atop hill; commands view to S and W. Heavily overgrown circular area (39m N-S; 40m E-W), enclosed by earthen bank (H 1.2m), with external fosse (D 1.8m). Entrance (Wth 4.9m), with causeway, on the S. Stone field boundaries adjoin site on E and SW. The above description has been derived from D. Lavelle (compiler), An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District including Lough Mask and Lough Carra. Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association (1994), No. 204.
