What is recorded here

Indicated is a vanished fairy fort on the Mayo bog, reduced to a shallow grassy disc that the Gweestion River watches from a hundred metres east. It appeared briefly on the 1838 map, disappeared from later charts, and resists the kind of certainty others take for granted. The land may be marking a boundary between the visible world and the imagination that makes life bearable.

Located on a slight rise in lowlying, boggy pasture bordered to NE by the Gweestion River. Ground falls away gently towards the river, which is 100m to E, and there is rising ground immediately to S–SW. Good views E−SE along the river valley. A circular enclosure (30-35m) is shown on 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on later map editions. The outline of a levelled circular enclosure is visible as a very low grassy platform (32m N–S; 34.5m E–W) surrounded by rush-grown land. It is slightly truncated on the N edge by an NE−SW field fence. Ephemeral remains of cultivation ridges on a N–S axis traverse the platform.
