Overview

Indicated — Kilrush Lower is recorded as Crannog at Kilrush Lower. It preserves evidence of a home or defended living place built on a natural or made island in a lake. The source record also describes the surviving evidence; its details are kept below.

Who lived here and when

The record identifies Indicated — Kilrush Lower as Crannog. It does not safely name every person, family or worker who used it, or fix all phases to exact years.

Homes and daily life

The recorded type points to a home or defended living place built on a natural or made island in a lake. That explains the likely everyday purpose without claiming people, tools or customs that the exact record does not prove.

What was found

The saved source says: Described by O'Sullivan (2004, 114-5) as following; 'Located on the southwest shore of a small lake (Newtown Lough) on the modern Meath/Westmeath border. The site is located on the end of a small promontory of marshy land extending out into the water. The crannóg is a low, circular mound (dims. 19m N-S x 29m E-W; H 1-2m) of small stones situated at the water’s edge on the sandy shore of Newtown Lough. It has a level, grassy upper surface and is scarped on the shoreline side, over 1-2m, on north, east and west sides. There are no wooden posts visible, but there appears to be a slight kerb of stones along the north side'. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien based on details provided by Aidan O'Sullivan. Date of upload: 10 March 2017

Why it ended

The saved record does not establish one certain ending. A change in farming, water level, trade, fuel, ownership, route or settlement pattern may have ended the use, but no single cause is claimed without evidence.

Why it mattered

Indicated — Kilrush Lower fixes a real piece of work or daily life to an exact place. Even where names are lost, its remains show how people obtained food and materials, organised land, made homes or adapted to the local ground.
