Enclosure

What is recorded here

Site levelled about ten years ago, consisted of a large circular area enclosed by an earthen bank with external fosse which acted as a circular field boundary. Inside this enclosure in the centre was located another enclosure defined by an earthen bank and external fosse. This latter enclosure was locally known as a fort and may have been a ringfort. Aerial photograph (CUCAP, ATC 58) shows large circular enclosure with smaller enclosure in the centre. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
