Indicated

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated was a thirty-metre ringfort hidden inside an Offaly forest until machines levelled it in the 1950s. It has no visible marker now, but the trees still stand where the bank once cut the earth. Forgetting is not the same as losing; the shape lives in the memory of the field.
Not visible at ground level. Described in 1984-5 as a ringfort that was levelled in the 1950s and consisted of a circular area (diam. approx. 30m) enclosed by a bank and situated inside a forested area (Stout 1984-5). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
