What is recorded here

Indicated is a broken ring on rising Offaly ground where beech trees still mark the perimeter of a forgotten home. People may have lived inside the bank before turning the same circle into a living fence, weaving human days and seasonal growth through one shape. The field fence now cuts across the northern edge, reminding us that the ring has never stopped being used, only changed the kind of life it holds.

Situated on rising ground in undulating countryside. Present remains consist of a sub-circular shaped area (diam. 27m N-S) enclosed by a poorly preserved bank (Wth 3m) reduced in places to a scarp and elsewhere enhanced by dumping of field clearance debris. No evidence of an outer fosse or entrance feature. Field fence intersects site at NW. The presence of beech trees along the perimeter of the enclosure, its location on demsene land and its depiction on the OS 6-inch map suggest that this may be the site of a tree-ring. May have been a ringfort that was reused as a tree-ring. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
