What is recorded here

Indicated is a circular stone fort in County Cavan, marked on maps since 1836. Its thick drystone wall still stands around a raised area twenty-six metres across, though the original entrance has vanished. The fort has watched Cavan fields for centuries, keeping its shape while forgetting the name of the door.

Marked 'Fort' on OS 1836 and 1876 eds. Roughly circular raised area (int. diam. c. 26.5m) enclosed by a substantial drystone wall faced internally and externally with large stones. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995).
