Indicated

A spring well over which there was an upright slab with an incised cross-and-circle (Ó Danachair 1960, 77). There is a vague tradition that this was a holy well. There is no trace of a well or a cross-slab at the location indicated by Ó Danachair. However, the well marked on the 2nd edition of the OS map about 100m to W may be the one in question. This is now surrounded with a modern concrete tank and there is no trace or local knowledge of a cross-slab. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Linked to an early Christian tradition, the site is associated with a cross-and-circle motif, often found at locations connected to saintly cults or ritual practices. Though no saint is specifically named, such symbols frequently appear at holy wells dedicated to local or regional saints, suggesting a possible devotional or healing function in the early medieval period.
