Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a small earthen ringfort on a Mayo rise, its curved scarp still standing above a bend in the stream. The nearest gap opens into a rectangular hollow, likely cut later for stones or soil, yet the original shape remains clear enough to walk around and imagine. A second similar rath lies forty metres south, suggesting this was not a lonely marker but a small neighbourhood of human life.
In undulating pasture, located on a rise, which provides good views in all directions and overlooks a bend in a stream, located c. 80m to NE. Roughly circular raised area (diam. 18.5m N−S; 15m E−W) defined by an earthen scarp (ext. H 1.5m; Wth slope 3-4m). A gap (Wth 4.5m) in the scarp at NE opens into a sunken rectangular area (15m NE−SW; 7.5m NW−SE) in the interior; this appears to be the result of relatively modern disturbance/quarrying. The diameter of this enclosure is rather small, and the interior area has been greatly disturbed, however, it appears to be the remains of a rath. Another possible rath (MA040-012----) of similar size is located 40m to S. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 11 April 2018
