What is recorded here
Indicated is a subcircular earthen ringfort in County Mayo, Ireland, where a low ridge holds extensive views above damp, rush-grown pasture. Its bank still marks a inhabited shape, though a modern road has cut through the west and thorns have swallowed the outer edge. The eastern gap may have been an entrance, leaving the interior open to weather, animals and the quiet traffic of memory.
In rush-grown, damp pasture, located on a low ridge, with extensive views.
Subcircular area (39.5m N−S; 35.7m E−W) defined by a bank. The bank (Wth 3.4m; int. H 0.25m at N, 0.4m at S; ext. H 1.3m at N, 1.5m at S) has a low internal lip, reduced almost to a scarp in parts, especially on the E arc. The external face is cut to the vertical –probably in the modern era; it is thickly ringed with hawthorn/blackthorn scrub, gorse and brambles. A portion of the bank at SW−W has been truncated to a vertical scarp by a modern road which skirts the rath. A break (Wth 5m) at E may be on the site of an original entrance.
The interior slopes down slightly to E. A field fence, with a field ditch on its N side, crosses the centre of the rath on an E−W axis.
