What is recorded here
Indicated is a stone ringfort on a rocky Clare ledge where a sheer cliff drops west and south, forcing every resident to face the open sea or leave. Its circular wall still stands partly intact beside a later pen and small gabled building, suggesting people lived there long enough to keep animals and build rooms. The broken northern section and scattered field walls hint that the fort changed with time rather than disappearing all at once.
On a rocky ledge with a sheer cliff to the W and SW, with excellent views to the SW and W and with higher ground from NNE to SSW. Within a large field system (CL004-027001-). Hachured on the 1842 OS 6-inch map and indicated on the 1915 ed. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996).
A roughly circular cashel (diam. 30m N-S; 26.8m E-W) defined by a drystone wall (Wth 0.6-0.9m; int. H 1.3-1.7m; ext. H 1.5-2.2m) with outer stone facing visible (ext. H 2.2m at S). The cashel wall has been removed from N to ENE and replaced by a scarp (Wth 4.2m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.5m at N). The rocky interior slopes gently to the E and a later pen (3m NW-SE; 2.3m NE-SW) abuts the perimeter of the cashel wall at SSW in the interior. Field walls abut the cashel wall at SW, NW and NE and a gabled building (est. int. dims. 4.4m E-W; 3.2m N-S) is located outside the cashel wall to the NNW.
