Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a forgotten fairy fort in County Mayo, a circular earthen ring barely visible beneath pasture and overgrowth. It sits two hundred metres south of a larger ringfort, suggesting a nested settlement where human hands shaped the land before memory faded. The missing southeast gap and hidden interior passage hint that the fort was never closed, but open to entry, exit and transformation.
In pasture, on E-facing slope, 200m S of ringfort (MA100-096----). Circular raised area (38m N-S; 38m E-W), defined by earthen bank (H 1.2m), heavily overgrown. External fosse on S. Gap on SE (Wth 2.1m). Possible Man-made underground passage (MA100-097001-) in interior. The above description has been derived from D. Lavelle (compiler), An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District including Lough Mask and Lough Carra. Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association (1994), No. 106. Date of upload: 6 February 2013
