What is recorded here

Situated in a slight hollow on a N-facing slope within a very extensive field system (CL009-059001-) spanning several townlands. Listed as ‘Cashel’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). Westropp (1897, 120) cited three cahers on the hill but it is unclear if this site was intended. On inspection in 1997 this was found to be a subcircular area (int. dims. 26.6m E-W; 23.3m N-S) defined by a drystone wall (H c. 1m) with some ‘post and panel’ construction N-SE. A natural shelf exists inside the perimeter SSE-NNW (Wth 3-6m; H 0.5m). The enclosure may have been built to protect livestock from injuring themselves on the shelf.
