What is recorded here

In a field of poor scrubland and rough pasture. This rectangular drystone structure (L 15.9m, Wth 5.3m) with a doorway in N wall is locally believed to be the schoolhouse of Roderic O'Flaherty. The OS Letters, quoting Molyneaux's description of 1709, notes that 'Old O'Flaherty' lived in 'a miserable condition' and ended his days in extreme poverty. (O'Flanagan 1927a, Vol. 3, 162; Killanin 1947, 131; Killanin and Duignan 1967, 429) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
