Indicated, Aghalahard is a polygonal bawn in County Mayo with square turrets, a tower house in the south-west corner, and three gun loops west of that tower. Its angles still suggest a place built to be seen, defended, and remembered. People may have lived inside those hard lines, heard gunfire or footsteps, and kept the house through changing times.

An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District records a ‘polygonal shaped bawn with square turrets’ which encloses a tower house (MA120-024----) in the SW corner and a later building (MA120-024002-) in the SE corner. The bawn ‘rebuilt in a number of places, contains three gun loops in an embrasure W of tower house.’ (Lavelle 1994, 106, no. 703).
