Hutton Castle, West Lodge stands in the Scottish Borders as a 19th Century gate lodge, gate pier and wall, marking the entrance to a larger estate rather than the main house itself. The separate parts suggest a formal approach where visitors arrived by carriage or on foot, judged the scale of the place, and passed through a boundary made visible stone by stone.
