Hutton Castle, East Lodge stands in the Scottish Borders as an early 20th Century gate lodge, gate pier and wall, marking the entrance to a larger estate rather than the castle itself. The stone work still performs its old job, framing the approach and telling visitors they have reached the boundary of someone else's land. Whether the lodge kept out intruders or simply shaped the arrival of guests, it turned an ordinary road into a threshold, and that distinction is what makes the place memorable.
