Hut site in Mweelin

On a W-facing slope on the E bank of the Mweelin River in an area of heather-covered cutaway bogland in the Connemara National Park. This small subcircular enclosure (diam. c. 3m) is visible on an elevated fork of land between the river and a smaller stream. It is defined by a heather and moss-covered bank of earth and stone (Wth 0.8m; max. int. H 0.45m at N; ext. H 0.2-0.8m ) and is best preserved from NNW to NNE; only traces survive from E to S. Possibly associated with the pre-bog wall (GA023-047----) which lies c. 30m to the NW on the other side of the river. A ruined farmhouse and outbuilding lie to the SE. This monument was brought to the attention of the Archaeological Survey of Ireland by Helen Riekstiņš.
