Keel, Iveragh Peninsula, County Kerry, Ireland: A rectangular hut site and nearby fulacht fiadh preserve the shape of repeated human use beside a small stream. The hut keeps only its foundation courses, measures about 6.1m by 2.55m internally, and has no visible entrance, while the horseshoe-shaped mound holds fire-shattered stones, blackened earth and charcoal near a shallow depression facing the water. Together they suggest cooking, gathering and occupancy in a tight coastal landscape, with the hut perhaps belonging to a later period than the older burning ground.
The rectangular hut occurs c. 100m SW of the smaller enclosure. Only its foundation courses, .65m in average width, survive. Internally it measures 6.1m NW-SE x 2.55m NE-SW. Its corners are rounded internally and there is no visible entrance. The structure may be relatively modern in date. A fulacht fiadh (KE071-051002-) is located on the bank of a small stream, c. 150m SW of the larger enclosure. The horseshoe-shaped mound has overall dimensions of 7m N-S 8.5m E-W and stands 1.4m high. At its N side, facing the stream, is a sloping, subrectangular depression, 3.4 x 1.3 x .45m deep. The mound is composed of small fire-shattered stones and blackened earth with a high charcoal content. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 29. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013
