What is recorded here
Huntly Castle is a ruined palace and towerhouse beside the Deveron, where three fortifications have guarded the river crossing since the 12th century. The oldest motte still stands as a grassy mound, while the later stone castle preserves a heraldic doorway, carved chimneypieces and oriel windows that once dazzled visitors. Its courtyard held kitchens, stables and offices, and a Civil War ravelin added a detached artillery position beyond the east front. What remains is not a complete building but a layered boundary marker, still shaping the town through absence as much as stone.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Huntly Castle as Archaeological Feature (period Unassigned)(possible), Ditch (period Unassigned), Ring (jet)(period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Huntly Castle was built by the Gordon family in the 15th century and later held by the Marquesses of Huntly, important figures in Scottish history. It is remembered as a key seat of power for the Gordons and as a site of strategic and historical significance during the Wars of Scottish Independence and later conflicts.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
