Commemorative plaque

What is recorded here

This red commemorative plaque records: Chantry Cottage. On this site, in 1510, Sir Humphrey Coningsby, of Penne's Place was licensed to set up a Chantry Chapel, to help with the 'consolation of Christ's faithful and especially the infirm'; serving local Christians. It was dissolved in 1552 on the orders of Edward VI, becoming a lodging house for church travellers going north out of London. Recorded plaque organisation: Radlett & District Museum.
Humphrey Coningsby, an influential landowner in the early 16th century, established a Chantry Chapel to provide spiritual support and comfort to local Christians; his initiative reflects the significant role of chantries in medieval English religious life before their dissolution under Edward VI.
