What is recorded here
Woodstown, County Limerick, is the birthplace of Hugh Gough, 1st Viscount Gough, who emerged from that Irish soil to become a Field Marshal and shape imperial wars across China and India. The town gives no grand monument to his global reach, yet it produced the man who commanded British forces against the Mahrattas and Sikhs. Gough left Woodstown a junior officer and returned aged eighty-nine, having carried a small Irish life into the largest conflicts of his era.
