What is recorded here
Detached five-bay single-storey lobby-entry vernacular house, built c.1850, single-bay off-centre entrance porch to front and single-storey lean-to extension to rear. Steeply-pitched corrugated-metal roof, rendered chimneystack, replacement rainwater goods, flat roof to porch with stepped cornice and central finial. Roughcast rendered walls, smooth render to plinth and within porch. Window openings irregularly spaced, having smooth-rendered reveals, cut-stone sills and two-over-two timber sash windows to front elevation, fixed timber window to north gable. Door recessed within porch with half-glazed and sheeted timber door. Replacement sheeted timber door to south gable. Set back from road with front garden having corrugated metal outbuilding to east and pedestrian entrance with square-profile rendered piers and replacement gate to road.
A well maintained vernacular house retaining its historic form, which exhibits typical characteristics including a hearth-lobby plan form, irregular fenestration, and timber sash windows. The corrugated metal roof indicates that the house was probably formerly thatched and the thick walls uggest earthen or rubble stone construction. The porch is typical of twentieth century additions and the finial is a modest example of ornament using a form borrowed from the formal architectural tradition. Vernacular buildings of this type were once commonplace in the countryside but are now becoming increasingly rare. The corrugated metal outbuildings complete the setting of the house, which is a significant addition to the vernacular heritage of Cavan.
