King John’s stone keep still stands behind years of grass and forgotten quarry scars. Ralph de Buron first raised the earthworks, but John rebuilt them into a chapel, gatehouse and barbican that men could actually defend. Henry VIII gave the finished castle to the Duke of Norfolk in 1514, turning a military warning into a reward for service against the Scots. The Stanhope family came later, and the valley kept what they left behind: a ruined shadow where a working castle once commanded the land.
