Horsburgh Castle

Road (roman)

What is recorded here

Nether Horsburgh Castle is a ruined 16th-century tower house near Cardrona, built and occupied by the Borders family of Horsburgh before diminished fortunes forced its sale to Sir Robert Stewart of Shillingshaws. Three walls still rise about 12 metres above the valley floor, their thick stone marking a home that once faced the Hope Burn and overlooked the River Tweed. The missing east wall and vanished courtyard leave a gap the mind fills with footsteps, firelight and the ordinary noise of a family losing the place they had defended.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Horsburgh Castle as Road (roman). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Horsburgh Castle is a 16th-century tower house located in Midlothian, Scotland, and was built by the Horsburgh family, a prominent local landowning family. It is remembered for its historical association with the region's medieval and early modern aristocracy and for its well-preserved architectural features.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
