What is recorded here
Priest's Well in Cashel, County Derry, keeps a holy name though no human date or event has been recorded for it. The water may have drunk for centuries before people stopped repeating the story that named it. A priest may have knelt at its edge, or a family may have carried cups home for fever and forgiveness. The well still stands as a small doorway between the living town and the forgotten life that first believed it sacred.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as HOLY WELL: PRIEST'S WELL. Recorded period: UNCERTAIN. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
Linked to local Christian tradition, Priest's Well in Cashel is associated with early monastic practices, possibly connected to Saint Cianán of Clonfert or local clerics due to its name. Holy wells named after priests often served as sites for baptism or penitential rituals in medieval Ireland.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
