Holy well in Milltown (idrone East By.)

Holy well

What is recorded here

Brides Well in Milltown, County Carlow, is a lost holy well now drained and impossible to locate. It may have given clean water to brides, healed small fevers or simply marked the edge of a field people respected. The disappearance is not a failure of evidence but a change of life: the well stopped being used, the story thinned, and the land took back its shape.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 According to O'Toole (JKAS 1933, 245) 'Brides Well', reputed to be 'holy'. Field now drained. Not located.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
