Holy well in Derrynaseera

Holy well

What is recorded here

St. Kevin's Well in Derrynaseera, County Laois, is remembered only through a stopped-up mention in old letters, denying the water and the name. The townland swallowed the ritual site whole, leaving behind a ghost of cleanliness and devotion. What remains is a hole in local memory where a living well once stood, forcing imagination to fill the silence with forgotten prayers and hidden water.
Unlocated holy well within townland that is mentioned in the OS letters as 'St. Kevins Well that was situated in Dernaseeragh both of which are now stopped up' (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 1, p. 54). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 17 December 2007
Linked to St. Kevin, the well was traditionally associated with healing and pilgrimage, as was common with many holy wells dedicated to this early Irish saint. It is now disused, having been 'stopped up' in the past, as noted in historical records.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
