This blue commemorative plaque records: Sir Hiram Maxim 1840-1916 Prolific inventor, lived here 1889-1904. In a hangar to the south-west of the house he built a steam-powered flying machine which briefly lifted itself off the ground in 1894 Recorded plaque organisation: Dartford Borough Council.
Sir Hiram Maxim was an American-born British inventor best known for creating the first portable machine gun; his steam-powered flying machine represented early experimentation in aviation, briefly achieving flight in 1894.
