Hillsborough Fort stands as a square earthen rampart with outer stone facing in County Down, built from 1630 to 1650 by Peter Hill and Colonel Arthur Hill on the old Magennes stronghold. Charles II made it a Royal Fort, and William of Orange rested there before marching south to the Boyne in 1690. The Hillsborough Old Guard still marks its history, keeping the place alive long after the guns fell silent.
