Hill Fort

Half a kilometre from the churning Atlantic, four rings of bare stone climb a green ridge like a fortress dreamed into the hill. The outer wall still encloses fourteen acres, wide enough for herds, festivals or every person on Inis Mór when the sea rose. Inside the third ring, upright slabs bristle like a hedge of knives, waiting for no one and remembering every hand that carried them.
